Northern Samar Provincial Government buys farmers' produce as part of food packs

Catarman, Northern Samar--Governor Edwin Ongchuan once again orders the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) to source out produce from local farmers for food packs distribution to the 23 barangays of Catarman placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine.

“On top of distributing canned goods and processed products, Governor Edwin Ongchuan advised us to buy fresh produce from our farmers. In that way, we can help our farmers financially", says Jenny Darish, head of the PSWDO.

Aside from providing sure market to farmers, Darish said farm products are nutritionally beneficial in strengthening the immune system against COVID-19.

“With this mandate, we will not only help our farmers sell their produce, we can also abide with the DOH’s call to have healthy consumption in Filipino households in this pandemic.” Darish added.
Vegetables and farm supplies have become part of the relief packs  distributed by the provincial government among its constituents since March this year.

As COVID-19 slowly creeps into communities, the Provincial Government of Northern Samar will continually help farmers stave off a pandemic-related food crisis in the province as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions.

“Food has never been more important in securing the health and safety of families in this pandemic, hence Governor Edwin Ongchuan assures that interventions will be in place to allow farmers and agricultural workers to continue their work and to provide channels for marketing their produce and ultimately mitigate the risk of food shortage and high prices in the province” Provincial Information Officer Jhon Allen Berbon said.

Through DA’s Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita Program, the Provincial Government of Northern Samar purchases farmers’ local produce for distribution as food assistance to areas under ECQ.
